Breeching – the strap that fits behind the animals haunches to prevent the carriage/cart from hitting the animal when it slows down/stops.
As the animal slows, the cart/carriage runs forward, and the shafts/poles of the cart pull the breeching forward against the haunches of the animal, which then slows down/stops the cart and prevents it hitting the back of the animal
